On the bright and sunny day of September 13, 2023, Citnalta joined NYC SCA President, Nina Kubota, local and state elected officials and P.S. 47Q Principal, Heather Lorenz, to celebrate the opening of the new P.S. 47 in Broad Channel, Queens.
The school has come a long way since Citnalta was awarded the $49M Contract with Notice to Proceed in late October 2021. The Citnalta team was excited and eager to come together to commemorate this incredible milestone.
The original school was badly impacted by Superstorm Sandy in 2012, it endured structural issues related to heating and cooling and lacked basic necessities for childhood education such as a gymnasium, lunchroom, library and outdoor play space. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when social distancing orders were in place, the school was 40% over capacity limits. The school now holds 260 seats and is sustainable, resilient and fully accessible for grades 3K-8. Children and faculty have occupied the building since the first day of school on September 7, 2023.
P.S. 47 is located in Broad Channel and features administration offices, a lobby, medical office, cafeteria, library and a gymnasium/auditorium. There is one pre-K classroom, one kindergarten classroom, eight standard classrooms, three special education classrooms and a middle school science demo and multi-use room. The exterior space has an asphalt play yard, early childhood care yard with a rubber safety surface, and a 1200 square-foot garden area.
